In Limburg the Man Met De Haak (translated: Man With The Hook) was a water demon. Other names were Hakeman", "Jan-den-Haak", "Menneke Met De Haak", "Hookemenneke" and "Piet Met De Haak". In West-Flanders there was a female version called "Kalle Met De Haak"[1]. He was a Child Terror of the area. People described him as a black figure with green eyes, a beard full of seaweed and webs between his toes. He would drown children when they got too close to the water, and fed on their blood. Each poor soul he captured, he kept inside an urn. If you could get your hands on one of these urns, freeing their soul would be as easy as tipping the container.[2]
